Dr. Shawkat Hossain (Romel) currently serves as an Assistant professor of Hepatology at Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Dr. Shawkat attained his basic medical degree (MBBS) from Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital under Dhaka University in 2004. Then he completed his internship from the same medical college in 2005. He later obtained Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Hepatology from Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in 2018.
He is considered a master clinician of liver and gastrointestinal diseases and is regularly referred difficult to treat cases. His main clinical work focusses on the treatment of Jaundice, viral hepatitis (Hepatitis B and C), Alcoholic liver disease, Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), Liver cirrhosis, Liver cancer, Peptic ulcer disease, diarrheal diseases, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), disorder of pancreas, Diseases of gallbladder and biliary tree.
Dr. Shawkat is a hepatologist as well as a therapeutic endoscopist. He is highly skilled both in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic and colonoscopic procedures like; Endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL), Endoscopic and colonoscopic polypectomy, Esophageal stenting, Endoscopic removal of foreign bodies, Endoscopic cyanoacrylate glue injection in fundal varix, Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). He is a regular trainer of GI Endoscopic Surgery Training program of Green life medical college hospital. He has 5 national publications that have published in Mitford medical journal and Bangladesh Hepatology journal.
Dr. Shawkat is a member of the Asia Pacific Association of Study of Liver (APASL), Association of Study of Liver Diseases Bangladesh (ASLDB) and Forum for the Study of Liver Diseases Bangladesh (FSLDB). He is also an executive member of BSMMU Hepatology Alumni Association.
