Prof Nasima Akhtar is the Professor of Otolaryngology at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Her main clinical interests are Otology, Cochlear implants, and the prevention of Deafness. She is the first female fellow & only female Cochlear Implant surgeon in Bangladesh. Prof Nasima is an academician and dedicated to education and training in Otolaryngology. As an Otologist, she is dealing with all form of otologic procedures including complex ones. Hearing reconstruction & prevention of deafness is her special target. One of the keen interests of Prof Nasima is to acquire advanced knowledge and skill & to serve the poor people of Bangladesh. Prof Nasima is currently working as a Team Member of the Cochlear Implant Program at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka, Bangladesh and has done more than 70 cochlear implant surgery successfully. She has got advanced training in otology & implantology from different famous Centres of the world mainly House Ear Institute(USA), Causse Ear Clinic (FRANCE), Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Birminghum, UK), Foundation Course for Cochlear Implantation at the Australian Hearing Hub. Prof Nasima was the Investigator of the National Survey on Prevalence of Hearing Impairment in Bangladesh 2013(Technical support: WHO, Bangladesh).
She is an invited person to WHO SEARO meeting for formulation of guidelines for infant hearing screening and attended all WHO SEARO intercountry consultation meetings & all World Congresses on Ear and Hearing Care as faculty.
Prof Nasima is working as an expert in the Control of Noise Pollution Program with the Department of Environment, Ministry of Environment & Forest, Bangladesh.
As a faculty she is doing all forms of otological surgery including cochlear implants & she is involved with teaching & training post-graduate students (MS, FCPS, DLO), supervising their Thesis and actively involved with all post-graduate Examinations of Otolaryngology.
Prof Nasima has given voluntary service to poor people in “ENT & Head Neck Cancer Hospital & Institute”, Agargaon, Dhaka Since 2003
