Professor Dr. Towhidul Alam is a Surgeon and Endoscopist born on March 10, 1957 in Bagerhat, Khulna, Bangladesh. He is the founder of Green Life Endo-Laparoscopic Centre (GLELC). Towhidul Alam has been in the laparoscopic surgery for more than two & half decade. He has introduced endoscopic surgery among the surgeon for the first time In Bangladesh & has got the large individual experience in Endoscopic surgery. He is also the pioneer of Interventional Pancreato-Billiary EUS & third space surgery in Bangladesh.

After completing his M.B.B.S at Sher-E-Bangla Medical College, Barisal, Bangladesh in 1982 and  FCPS in General Surgery In 1993,  FACS 2018 & finally FRCS in the year 2019. He has done his basic training on GI endoscopy for six months under Prof. Dr. Mian Mashhud Ahmed, Consultant Gastroenterology in the Department of Gastroenterology Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka in the year 1996. He went to India in 1999 as a clinical fellow and trainee in Laparoscopic surgery & Therapeutic Endoscopy at the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology of Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (Deemed University), Chennai for three months under Prof. B. Krishna Rau. In the same year he also worked with Dr. C. Palanivelu for two weeks on advanced Laparoscopic digestive surgery & Laparoscopic knotting and suturing techniques in Coimbatore Institute of Gastrointestinal Endo Surgery. In 2002 he performed the first ever Therapeutic ERCP among the surgeons of Bangladesh. With an intension to establish Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) in Bangladesh he has successfully completed three months course in “Certificate in Clinical Ultrasonography” conducted by The Bangladesh Society of Ultrasonography  in 2006,   at the same time he has also qualified with distinction at the evaluation examination of The Jefferson Ultrasound Research and Education Institute, The Thomas Jefferson University, Pennsylvania, USA. In 2008 he has taken training on advance laparoscopic surgery at Ethicon Institute of Surgical Education, Delhi, India. In 2013 he went to Endoscopy Asia, Mumbai, India for fellow ship training on Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) for two weeks under Dr. Vipulroy Rathod, the pioneer interventional endosonologist in this part of Asia.  He also took training for one week on EUS at Jaswant Rai Specialty Hospital, Meerut, U.P, India under Dr. Malay Sharma in the year 2014. In 2016 he went to Boldota Institute of Digestive Sciences (BIDS), Mumbai, India for one week training on both therapeutic endoscopy & EUS under Dr. Amit Madoy. In 2017 he went for a fellow ship training in the Gastroenterology Hospital of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, China under Prof. Bing Rong Liu in Central China International Minimally Invasive Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Training Course on NOTES, POEM & hands on training of ESD.

He has performed more than 6,000 therapeutic ERCP & 800 other GI therapeutic endoscopic procedure, which Is one of the large individual experience of Endoscopic surgery in Bangladesh, apart from over 300 various diagnostic and therapeutic EUS  procedures .

Prof. Dr. Towhidul Alam is the promoter and Chief surgeon of GLELC, a state of the art tertiary care facility in Gastroenterology, Hepatobiliary, pancreatic, Endoscopy & Laparoscopy, located at 32, Green road, Dhaka, Bangladesh. His vast experience in Advanced Therapeutic ERCP has complimented his EUS skills in diagnosis, for desired clinical outcomes. He has found the role of combined approach of Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) and ERCP to be of great value in patients with acute, recurrent acute and chronic pancreatitis apart from pancreatic tumors.

Prof. Towhidul Alam has directly trained 210 aspiring Surgeons and Medicine specialist on GI endoscopy from all over the country through eleven organized course during the last eleven years. He has also involved as key person in the training of more than 400 Surgeons of different specialty in Basic laparoscopic Surgery through Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Bangladesh (SLSB) & University Centre for Endo-Laparoscopic Surgery (UCELS). He is the key person involved in creation of a state of the art world class training centre “University Centre for Endo-Laparoscopic Surgery” (UCELS) in Bangladesh at BangaBandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) through the financial assistance from World Bank. He has edited a training manual named “Manual of Endo-Laparoscopic Surgery” for the trainee surgeons.

He is now recognized as one of the leaders in Endoscopic Surgery and has represented Bangladesh in many countries as International Faculty & Speaker.

Prof. Towhidul Alam is in high regard in the doctor’s community and is respected as an exemplary role model for the young surgeons in his field.

Prof. Towhidul Alam is now member of many international bodies like, Endo-Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA), Society of American Gastrointestinal Surgeons (SAGES) & Asia Pacific Hernia Society (APHS). He is the immediate past president of Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Bangladesh (SLSB) & served the society as secretary General & President for long eight years. He is also the member of other national body like, Bangladesh Gastroenterology society, Society of Surgeons of Bangladesh. He has got 32 publication in national & international journals and presented 90 papers on his personal work on endoscopic surgery both nationally & Internationally.
